Abstract

The military was, and still remains, a predominantly male environment. However, since the world wars this scenario has gradually changed, especially in western countries. Although history demonstrates that the war environment belongs to men, examples of women participating in conflicts in various eras and geographical areas can be seen, indicating that female participation is not as new a phenomenon as one might imagine. Following feminist theory of international relations and security, this paper addresses important analytical categories to explain female participation in the military, such as gender. Like feminist theorists, the work follows the qualitative methodology with textual and documentary analysis research techniques, with study of interviews and reports. Finally, the material examines women's participation in the United States Armed Forces, as it is the hegemonic country with the highest participation in conflict; This research is produced with data from the female contingent, as well as a study of the obstacles still faced for full integration in the military, such as prejudice, sexual and gender harassment, among others, indicating that integration exists, but not entirely, since there is still resistance to accepting them as peers.
