Chemical agents with action in dental biofilm and with anti-inflammatory properties have been widely inserted in products for use in Dentistry. These may represent an adjunctive resource in the treatment of gingivitis, in order to optimize clinical results of patients being treated. In front of the diversity of products available, it is necessary that the dentists know the clinical performance of each one of these agents in order to properly prescribe the most appropriate for the patient. The objective of this study was to approach the use of toothpastes containing stannous fluoride as a therapeutic alternative in the treatment of gingivitis through a literature review. For this purpose, a research was carried out in the databases PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar to find articles that used the following descriptors: "stannous fluoride", "gingivites control" and "antimicrobial dentifrices", without filters to restrict the time period. According to the articles included in this review, it can be said that the use of dentifrice with stannous fluoride enables a significant reduction both the visible plaque index, and in the gingival bleeding index. Through the literature review conducted, it can be claimed that indication of dentifrice containing stannous fluoride is safe and represents a good resource as an adjunctive control of supragingival biofilm and in the treatment of gingivitis.
