Abstract

Introdution: During fighter flights, pilots face risks such as hypoxia and loss of consciousness. The review explores the relationship between stressful loads, autonomic responses and cognitive performance in these pilots. The study aims to fill gaps in understanding these critical elements to flight safety and effectiveness during air operations. Purpose: identify the relationship between stressful loads and the effects of fighter flying in experienced pilots, especially analyzing autonomic responses and cognitive performance. Methods: The systematic review carried out in this research was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023495636). The
research questions were defined by the PICO model in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, as follows:
1. Population: Experienced Fighter Pilots; 2. Intervention: Hunting Flight, Acrobatic Flight, Flight Simulator; 3. Comparator: Comparison of Flights, Comparison of autonomic or cognitive responses; 4. Results:
psychological stress, cognitive performance, autonomic responses. The bibliographical research was carried out in 4 databases: Pubmed, Embase, Medline and Sportdiscus, using the keywords pilot, physiological stress, hypergravity in English. Results: 358 articles were found, but only 5 articles were selected for final review. The joint analysis of these studies reveals that heart rate (HR) emerges as a crucial variable in pilots’ physiological responses to extreme situations, whether rapid decompression, combat missions or hypoxia. The atypicality of responses, evidenced in several studies, highlights the complexity of autonomic reactions in challenging contexts.
